Every Nigerian crypto user has experienced some version of this. You trade a gift card worth 150,000 naira. You check your bank account. It says 146,200 naira. You never agreed to pay 3,800 naira in fees. Nobody mentioned 3,800 naira in fees. And yet, somehow, that money is gone.
This guide names every fee category in Nigerian crypto trading, explains what each one is, and tells you how to evaluate whether what a platform charges is fair.
The most significant fee most Nigerian traders pay is also the least visible. It is called the spread.
When a platform shows you a rate for converting USDT to naira, that rate is almost never the mid market rate and the true exchange rate between dollars and naira at that moment. It is a rate with a small percentage built in as the platform's margin. The difference between the mid market rate and the rate you receive is the spread, and it is how most crypto platforms make their revenue.
A spread of one to two percent on a well run platform is generally considered fair. A spread of five percent or more on a regular basis means you are losing significantly more than necessary on every conversion. Because the spread is embedded in the rate rather than listed as a separate fee, most users never notice it as a charge.
The way to evaluate a platform's spread is to compare its rate for a given asset against the current mid market rate visible on CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko. The difference expressed as a percentage is the spread you are paying.
fees are charges paid to the blockchain network for processing your transaction. They are not charged by the platform — they are charged by the network itself. However, the platform determines which network you use and therefore indirectly determines what gas fee you pay.
Ethereum network transactions carry the highest gas fees, which can spike dramatically during periods of high network congestion. TRC-20 transactions on the TRON network have near zero gas fees, which is the primary reason TRC-20 USDT has become the default for Nigerian traders. When choosing which network to use, prioritise TRC-20 for USDT unless the receiving party specifically requires a different network.
When you convert crypto to naira and withdraw to your bank account, some platforms charge a flat fee for the bank transfer. This fee is separate from the spread on the conversion. Platforms that charge both a spread and a withdrawal fee are extracting value at two separate points in your transaction.
Look for platforms that either charge zero withdrawal fees or clearly disclose the fee before you commit to the withdrawal, so the amount that will arrive in your account is what you see before confirming.
Some platforms charge a percentage fee on top of the spread for each transaction. This is most common on exchanges that also offer investment features or advanced trading tools. For a simple gift card or USDT to naira conversion, this additional layer of fees is not something you should accept when alternatives exist that charge only through the spread.
Depositing naira to fund a crypto purchase should be free. If a platform charges you for depositing naira via bank transfer, that fee structure is worth questioning. Most legitimate Nigerian platforms offer free naira deposits as a standard feature.
Some platforms charge fees if your account has not been used for a defined period. These fees are more common on internationally focused platforms than on locally registered Nigerian ones. Read the terms and conditions of any platform you use to check whether inactivity fees apply.
Before committing to any trade, the total cost of the transaction is the combination of the spread percentage and any fixed withdrawal fee. A platform with a 1.5% spread and zero withdrawal fee on a 200,000 naira conversion charges you 3,000 naira in total. A platform with a 0.5% spread and a 2,500 naira flat withdrawal fee charges you 3,500 naira on the same conversion. The smaller spread does not necessarily mean the cheaper transaction.
Do this calculation before every trade, particularly for larger amounts. The difference in annual cost between two platforms with different fee structures can be substantial.
Stockhut displays the applicable rate for every transaction before you submit any card details or transfer any crypto. The rate shown is the rate applied at settlement. There are no adjustments after the fact and no surprise charges introduced midway through the process. The rate includes the platform's spread and that is the full cost of the transaction.
Knowing what you are paying and why is not a luxury in crypto trading. It is the baseline for making decisions that actually serve your financial interests. See your exact naira payout before committing to any trade on Stockhut.
