If you do any form of remote work, freelancing, or digital business and your clients are abroad, you have almost certainly run into the problem. Your client wants to pay you. The payment options available to them either do not support Nigeria properly, charge significant fees, or arrive so slowly that you are converting at a rate that is nothing like what you planned for.
The domiciliary account was supposed to be the answer. In practice, opening one at a Nigerian bank involves documentation requirements, minimum balance conditions, and processing times that put it out of reach for most working Nigerians. The good news is that it is no longer the only answer.
Wire transfers through SWIFT routing incur fees on both the sending and receiving ends, and the correspondent bank network adds additional deductions that are impossible to predict exactly. What arrives in your account is often less than what your client sent, with no clear explanation of where the difference went.
PayPal restricts full functionality for Nigerian accounts. You can receive a Nigerian PayPal account but withdrawing that balance to a Nigerian bank account is blocked. The money effectively becomes stranded.
Wise and Payoneer support Nigeria but with limitations. Wise does not support direct naira withdrawals for certain account types and Payoneer's fees on local bank withdrawals can reduce the final amount you receive meaningfully.
For many Nigerian freelancers, this entire category of options represents a system that was designed around other markets and retrofitted poorly for theirs.
Your client sends USDT to your wallet address. The transfer is confirmed in seconds to minutes depending on the network. You hold the USDT at its dollar value for as long as you choose. When you need naira, you convert on a trusted platform and the money arrives in your local bank account.
The entire process removes every intermediary that was previously taking a cut or creating friction.
● Step one: Create an account on a trusted Nigerian crypto platform. Stockhut and several other registered platforms will generate a USDT wallet address for you when you register. This address is what you share with your client.
● Step two: Confirm the network with your client before they send. As covered in our TRC-20 versus ERC-20 guide, USDT runs on multiple blockchain networks. TRC-20 is the fastest and cheapest and is the most widely used in Nigeria. Confirm with your client which network they are sending on, and provide the wallet address that matches that network.
● Step three: Share your wallet address securely. Copy the wallet address directly from the platform rather than typing it manually. A single character error sends the funds to the wrong destination with no way to reverse it.
● Step four: Convert to naira when you are ready. Once your USDT arrives, you can hold it for as long as you want at its dollar value. When you are ready to convert, open Stockhut, initiate the conversion, and the naira lands in your registered bank account within minutes.
Most international clients are familiar with USDT and comfortable sending it. If your client has not used it before, the process on their end is straightforward: they download any major crypto exchange app, purchase USDT using their local payment method, and send it to your wallet address. The entire setup takes them under an hour the first time and significantly less after that.
For clients who are uncomfortable with crypto specifically, Payoneer remains a usable middle option for smaller amounts. For anyone regularly receiving more than the equivalent of 50,000 naira per month from abroad, USDT on an automated platform is currently the most cost effective and fastest option available in Nigeria.
The average Nigerian freelancer loses between two and five percent of every international payment to fees, conversion spreads, and processing charges across traditional channels. On a monthly income of 500,000 naira from international clients, that is 10,000 to 25,000 naira disappearing before the money ever reaches you.
USDT received directly and converted through a platform with transparent rates and no withdrawal fees keeps that money where it belongs: in your account.
